about

Our instrumental version of a Gaelic waulking song takes a few creative liberties, including the addition of a B part to the original theme. The lyrics of the original song take the form of a flyting, or poetic exchange of insults. The singer defends her homeland against a previous singer’s insults by describing the brave and extravagant heroes of Barra, including Rory the Noisy who gave his horses wine to drink and shod them in gold. Our source was a 1938 clip catalogued on the Tobar an Dualchais database.
